'The house was spotless, and the rooms were spacious. The kitchen was well equipped which was good as we ate in most nights due to having small children. There was also a BBQ on the patio outside which we used a lot during our stay. There were great restaurants very close by and lists of restaurant recommendations were provided in the house.  There was a large folder left in the house, packed with information on days out and local activities. The owner Gillian was very friendly and went out of her way to assist with ideas for day trips and also assisted with booking activities online and phoning local restaurants for reservations.  The property is ideal if you want to either relax and unwind, sunbathing by the pool or enjoy the vast amount of sights and activities available in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques region. 'This was our second holiday at Les Vieux Chenes, having previously been there in 2015, and it remains an outstanding and well-appointed destination. The accommodation is spacious and well-equipped, and it is a great bonus to have exclusive use of a good-sized pool. The owner is very knowledgeable of the local area, and provides helpful advice and suggestions about things to do and places to visit. The meal that she offers on the first night is to be highly recommended. For the keen cyclist, there are plenty of local routes and, for the more ambitious, several mountain climbs, many of which regularly feature in the Tour de France, within easy reach. What a fantastic home, amazing grounds, and wonderful location. Gillian and her husband made us feel very welcome and were the perfect hosts. We traveled around the beautiful countryside and villages around the area and the home made a great base. Nicely appointed, great sized rooms, and very comfortable. My wife and Daughter and I always like to stay somewhere different each time we visit Europe, but if we were traveling to this area again, there is no question where we would stay.

BOOKING CONDITIONS - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ



You can contact us by email or telephone if you have any questions or wish to check latest availability. Any changes to your booking must be requested in writing by email. Payment in euros excepting UK Guests who may pay in GBpounds.

Guests should ensure they have adequate holiday insurance.

Once you inform us of your chosen dates and group details we will send you a booking form for you to fill in and return to us with your booking details. See below for rules on any group size changes after we confirm your booking.  You need to send us the non-returnable deposit (25%) within 5 days during this time we hold the property for you. Once the deposit is received we then confirm your booking to you. The remainder of the money, as well as the damage deposit (300 € or GBP250) must be paid no less than 8 weeks before the start of your visit.

 Any bank charges incurred due to money arriving from outside the EU/ UK or damage deposit being returned will be paid by the renter.

The house is only for the number of persons shown on your booking form (an absolute maximum of 5 persons in total) for the holiday duration. Any increase in group number after your booking has been confirmed may incur a fee of £75/€90 per person for each affected week.  This change of booking must be requested in writing and paid for prior to your holiday commencement.   We reserve the right to refuse the rental to the entire group where these occupancy rules are not adhered to and under these circumstances no refunds will be made.

The house is non smoking and we DO NOT accept pets.

 The rental commences after 16.00 on the start date and the property must be vacated by 10.00 on the last day.

If you are booking late (i.e. within 8 weeks) all the money is payable on making the reservation.

 Your damage deposit is returned after the end of your visit provided the property is left in a clean & tidy state. Deductions shall be made for breakages and any additional special cleaning required. However, the sum held shall not limit your liability to us. We refund the damage deposit due within one week after the end of the rental period by bank transfer.

In the event of you requesting a cancellation, a refund of amount paid will be made if we are able to re-let the Property less the deposit amount previously paid for each week of the let. If the Property is re-let at a lower price than the original price paid, i.e. at a last minute price or for only some of your booked holiday period, a refund of the new price less the deposit amount will be made. Following a cancellation any damage deposit paid will be refunded.  Payment for meals, following a cancellation, will be refunded providing you have given a minimum of 48 hours notice.  You are strongly recommended to have holiday cancellation insurance.

We shall not be liable for any losses or inconvenience caused to or suffered by you if the property shall be destroyed or substantially damaged before the start of the rental period and in any such event, we shall within seven days of notification to you refund all sums previously paid in respect of the rental period. We shall not be responsible for interruptions to public services or problems caused by severe weather.  Under no circumstances shall our liability to you exceed the amount paid to us for the rental of the house.

Note: Due to the house layout and furnishings we only accept children over 5 years old.




HISTORY


Parts of the building are as early as the late 1600's and old records show its owners, back in 1800, were wealthy and owned a large amount of land. However, their fortunes changed and much of the land was sold off, thus today we have just the two adjoining houses, small wooden barn, large traditional style garage and four acres (1.5 hectares). The extensive renovations took a bit longer than planned, but it gave us time to figure out how to make the best possible of this old building to ensure the renovation was sympathetic and used local, traditional materials where possible, as well as affording guests a high degree of comfort.


We have ensured all the bedrooms are a good size with nice well fitted bathrooms. The beds have quality new mattresses and the decoration & furnishings are a very good standard. There are large gardens with mature oak trees and other specimen trees, your own 18th century well-house (pictured) and no road noise from a busy road, despite being close to amenities


The Owners


Leigh spends most of his free time these days cycling the quiet roads and great cols easily accessed from the house and is happy to advise on routes. There is secure storage available for bikes.  Gillian worked as a chef in a busy pub-restaurant and loves finding excellent regional produce for guests to sample, but these days is also a keen artist and enjoys participating in plein air weekend events.

NOTE: We live in the adjoining property. Our house faces a different direction, with its own courtyard and garden, this gives both properties privacy from each other.
